Mark Betterson, a student at East Lee County High School in Lehigh Acres, Florida was suspended after standing up for fellow student, Jonathan Colon, who was bullied for being gay.
Colon was sitting in the school cafeteria when James Griffin, a known bully in the school, threw milk at his face and uttered homophobic slurs. Griffin then proceeded to punch Colon in the face and head. Colon did defend himself.
So Mark Betterson tried to stand up for Colon and was assaulted by Griffin. The two ended up in a fight.
Griffin was charged with battery by local police, while Betterson was suspended for 10 days because the school has a zero-tolerance policy on fighting.
Betterson says he was also bullied in school and knows how it feels, so he stepped in to break up the fight. "He was literally beating him up so I couldn't just sit there and watch a man get beat up," said Betterson.
Colon returned to school on Friday and organized a rally to protest Betterson's suspension. "It was a good reminder to me that there are good people at my school and that our school is a safe place to be," said Colon.
