A South Florida woman inadvertently set her dog on fire after she tried to burn a tick using a lighter, according to a Sun Sentinel report.
Telma Botcherby was cleaning her pet terrier, Ruby, at her Parkland, Florida home when she noticed a live tick on the floor.
The 50-year-old next brought out a barbecue lighter and tried to burn the tiny bug. That's when Ruby became startled and ran past the lighter.
The poor dog, having just been doused in highly flammable flea and tick spray instantly burst into flames.
"The dog panics when it sees the flame and jumps over the lighter," said Coral Springs Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Moser, according to the report. "The dog has this flammable chemical on it [that] catches fire."
Botcherby's quick-thinking husband, Jess Olivas scooped up Ruby in his arms and made a beeline for their swimming pool, ultimately saving her life.
Olivas wasn't without his own injuries, though.
"This took enough time to burn his upper torso and arms significantly," Moser said.
