North Korean defector Kim Kwang-il: gruesome sketches show torture, starvation in prison camps

A former North Korean prisoner Kim Kwang-il, who defected to South Korea in February 2009, commissioned the artists to draw sketches based on his memories of being tortured during his two years in North Korean prison camps. Kim, 40, says the drawings show what life is like inside North Korea.

North Korean prisoners in the camps were used as human punchbags by guards. They suffered from numerous forms of torture: being beaten until they vomited blood; being forced to hold their bodies stressed position until they collapsed; and standing up and down hundreds of times.

Then there was the threat of starvation, another constant for many North Koreans. To survive, hungry prisoners had to eat mice and snakes. Although the sketches are quite shocking, Kim Kwang-il said the reality is worse than what was depicted.

Based on theses sketches, the public hearings with 80 witnesses and interviews with 240 other people, the U.N. has charged North Korea with crimes against humanity. The accusations include murder, enslavement, torture, forced abortion, sexual violence and causing prolonged starvation.
