Dozens of volunteers banded together on Sunday to clean up hate-filled, anti-Korean messages and graffiti in Tokyo's ethnic Korean neighborhood of Okubo, according to local reports.
With rags and sponges in hand, the group of roughly 50, scrubbed away at shop signs, walls and the like, defaced with spray paint and markers.
While far-right groups haven't staged anti-Korean demonstrations in the area since September, citizen groups, such as Norikoenet, encountered anti-Korean graffiti in roughly 50 locations in and around the neighborhood while on patrol in February.
The groups discussed the issue with authorities at Tokyo's Shinjuku ward police station as well as its ward office.
The groups also took to social media, including Twitter, to condemn discriminatory graffiti.
A Japanese volunteer taking part in the clean up remarked that he thought graffiti in general doesn't look cool and added that he hoped that Japanese society as a whole would take a firmer stance against discrimination.
