A Chicago Transit Authority train arriving at the O'Hare Airport Station derailed, injuring 32 people just before 3 a.m. on Monday morning.
The train entered the station, jumped the bumper at the end of the track and went over the platform onto the escalator and stairs. No one was on the escalator or stairs when the derailment occurred.
Chicago Transit Authority spokesman Brian Steele told the Chicago Tribune the train was "apparently traveling at a higher rate of speed than a train would be" when entering a station normally. He said the conductor would be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard procedure after an accident.
Injured passengers were taken to four area hospitals, with most passengers in fair to serious condition but none of the injuries considered life threatening. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were looking into the derailment, and service at the O'Hare station was suspended.
The Chicago Transit Authority will provide buses between the airport and Rosemont station, meaning public transit trips to and from one of the country's busiest airports will take up to 10 minutes longer than normal, Steele said.
