This animation portrays the prosecution's version of events on the night Reeva Steenkamp was shot to death by Oscar Pistorius.

The prosecution rested its case against Oscar Pistorius on March 25th, the 15th day of his trial for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Through the testimony of numerous police and civilian witnesses, the prosecution has tried to paint Pistorius as violent, impulsive, and infatuated with guns.

In prosecutor Gerrie Nel's version of events, Pistorius and Steenkamp had an argument between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Valentine's Day, 2013. The argument was sufficiently intense to wake neighbors. Around 3 a.m., Steenkamp locked herself in the separate toilet room inside their bathroom. Pistorius, walking on his stumps rather than on his prosthetics as the defense claims he did, took his 9mm handgun into the bathroom.

Neighbors heard a female scream, which the prosecution says came from Steenkamp inside the toilet room. Pistorius then fired the first shot, which traveled through the toilet room door, and broke Steenkamp's hip. Police ballistics expert Captain Chris Mangema testified that Steenkamp would have still had sufficient time to scream after the bullet struck her hip. Neighbors heard that second scream followed by three more gunshots in quick succession, the last of which was fatal.

Pistorius said he fired in self-defence after he mistook her for a home intruder who had entered through the bathroom window.

If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
