The search for survivors in Saturday's mudslide near the rural town of Oso in Washington state continues, though authorities fear the death toll will soon rise sharply.
Twenty-five people have been confirmed dead, though 90 people remain unaccounted for. Rescue workers combed through the square-mile mountain of muddy debris and muck with the hopes of finding survivors at best, and at worst, closure for the families of victims waiting for news of loved ones.
County authorities have come under scrutiny with local politicians claiming response efforts were too slow and too small for the scale of the crisis. Volunteers were also refused access to the site immediately after it happened. Authorities have said in response that the area was too dangerous to allow any people additional to those dispatched for reasons of safety.
Five people injured in the disaster remain hospitalized.
