Greene County sheriff deputies responded to a late night call about a possible shooting at the Greenville home of 36-year-old Robert Blanchard. They found him dead from a gunshot wound in a shed in his backyard.
Authorities suspect his 16-year-old son, Zack, killed his father, then fled the scene in the older Blanchard's grey KIA minivan. He picked up three friends, Liam Lawler, Daniel Richards-Birchfield,both 15 and Shelby Riley, 16. They headed to Myrtle Beach with an arsenal of eight firearms and 200 rounds of ammunition.
The three boys and girl were spotted at a rest stop by highway patrol in Newberry County, South Carolina. When backup arrived, the teens led troopers on a car chase. Stop sticks were put down and they crashed their van and took off in the woods, leaving all but four of the weapons.
Helicopters, SWAT teams and officers on foot--a total of 80 people--combed the area for the suspects. Authorities were tipped off by a strawberry farmer who saw the teens near his fields.
The teens were later captured unarmed without incident. It is not yet known if the other teens knew about Blanchard's death before embarking on their road trip. The case is under investigation.
