CBS has made its choice, Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as the host of its late-night franchise, which Letterman created when he came to the network in 1993.
CBS made the announcement on Thursday, only a week after Letterman announced his retirement publicly on air.
After Letterman announced his retirement last week, CBS chief exec Leslie Moonves said negotiations took off at breakneck speed with a 'barrage of calls' from comics seeking the job. But after Colbert's agent, James Dixon, showed interest, the negotiation talks quickly became serious.
The five-year deal will see Stephen shed his Colbert Report persona in favor of, will the real Stephen Colbert please stand up. Moonves said that both sides were equally interested during negotiations. Moonves did say that Colbert had one special request: "He said, 'I want to be sure Dave is on board.'" Mr. Moonves said he had already decided that "it was essential to me to get Dave's blessing."
For the 11:30 slot, Comedy Central should consider the Key & Peele Report because the only thing better than a white conservative, is a black one. Only question now is, where will Republicans get reliable news from?
