A 22-year-old man is in custody after five students were brutally stabbed to death at a house party in northwest Calgary.

The suspect, identified as Matthew de Grood, is the son of a veteran police officer and recent graduate from the University of Calgary.

Reports said the suspect arrived at the party, obtained a large knife and targeted the victims one by one, stabbing them.

The suspect fled the scene on foot but was arrested about 40 minutes later a few blocks from the house with assistance from the K-9 unit.
He was taken to hospital to be treated for a dog bite.

The five victims, four males and a female, were all aged between 22 and 27.

The motive for the attack is still unknown. There is nothing to indicate that the suspect had taken drugs or alcohol and is believed to have gone to the party directly from work.

The suspect has been charged with 5 counts of first-degree murder.
