FARC mine explosions kill one Colombian soldier, injure 13

One soldier was killed and 13 others were injured on Tuesday after mines planted under a road by the 33rd Front of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) went off in northern Colombia.

According to local reports the mines, laid in the northeastern province of Norte de Santander along a stretch of road connecting the towns of Tibu and El Tarra, were set off by a Colombian army convoy was traveling on the road.

After the incident, the injured soldiers were brought to a local hospital in the regional capital of Cucuta and according to reports are not in critical condition.

The incident comes two days after troops from Task Force Vulcan found and neutralized 440 kilos of explosives planted by the FARC on the same road, EFE reported.

The FARC and the much smaller rebel group the National Liberation Army of Colombia (ELN) are active in the region.
FARC has been holding peace talks with the Colombian government since 2012, , according to EFE
Both the FARC and ELN are listed on the U.S. State Department's list of foreign terrorist organizations.
