A retired Brazilian colonel who admitted torturing people during the country's period of military rule between 1964 and 1985 was found dead after a break-in at his house in Rio de Janeiro.

Three men broke into Paulo Malhaes's property in the northern suburb of Novo Iguacu on Thursday, Al Jazeera reported.

Police said the thieves held Malhaes, his wife and the valet in separate rooms, before suffocating the ex-colonel. Coroners, however, have not ruled out a heart attack as the cause of death, according to media reports quoted by Al jazeera.

The thieves fled the scene with two computers and some antique firearms that the colonel had collected.

An investigation is ongoing.

Malhaes admitted last month to carrying out torture during Brazil's two-decade long period of military rule and gave graphic testimony of how he carried the tortures, BBC reported.

"I did my duty," he was quoted as saying. "I have no regrets."

Almost 500 people disappeared or were killed in Brazil between 1964 and 1985.
