Iraq's Interior Ministry says that Iraqi army helicopters attacked a convoy of tanker trucks that were traveling from Syria to the Iraqi border on Sunday (April 27). This is the first time Iraq has said it carried out an attack inside Syrian territory.

According to the interior ministry, the vehicles were travelling to the western Iraqi border province of Anbar, where the ISIL has been battling Iraqi security forces and controls the city of Fallujah. The convoy was heading towards the border and was due to supply jihadi militants in Iraq's Anbar province, the ministry added.

The strike killed at least eight people, according to an interior ministry spokesman.

"The army struck eight tanker trucks in Wadi Suwab inside Syrian territory as they were trying to enter Iraqi territory to provide the (jihadist) Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) with fuel," Brigadier General Saad Maan said.
