Japan, known for being the land of Mt Fuji, cherry blossoms, pretty ladies in kimono, and Godzilla. But did you also know that it's "酔っ払いサラリーマンの天国" as well? That means it's heaven for drunk Japanese workers!
And they have it really rough too. Most Japanese work pretty long hours. But as soon as they knock off work on Friday, many of them jam local bars and pubs to unwind from the weeks pressures. Unfortunately, due to the well-known low alcohol tolorance of many Japanese in combination with the need to "loosen up" during the after hours periods, it is not uncommon to see "socially lubricated" company workers literally passed out in the streets after 10pm in many Japanese urban areas.
There's really no problem here though-- Japan has one of the best transport systems in the world. Combine that with a zero tolerance law for drunk driving, and it's easy to understand why many people happily put up with this issue. Usually everyone is able to stagger home to their loved ones after having a 'sake-fest' after work, but sometimes things go wrong because of the last train. Because there's no 24 train service, you will witness a mad scramble for people to get on the final trains home around 12 midnight.
If you don't make it, well...外寝ったらいい、な. Japan is a safe country, so if you end up napping on a park bench or at a convenience store, no worries.
The sight of office workers wasted in the streets on a Friday night is pretty common, and not at all frowned on in Japanese society. In fact, it was once said that Japanese wives would scold their husbands for not going out and tieing one on with the boys. To them, getting zooted with co-workers means being looked upon favorably when it's time for bonuses and pay raises.
