A single-engine plane crashed into a Long Island back yard on Tuesday morning, killing the pilot.
Hanan Shoshani, a 53-year-old father of five from Jamaica Estates, Queens, had taken off at 8:50am from Republic Airport in East Farmingdale, and was due to land at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.
At around 9am, he radioed in to an Islip air traffic controller, that he needed help and had low visibility.
Witnesses say when he crashed a few minutes later, the space between the two houses was only about 30 yards apart, and that the pilot likely skilfully twisted the plane so as to land in the yard and not hit any structures.
In one of the houses, a mother grabbed her one-year-old baby and ran outside and away from the crash site. She says the infant slept through the impact.
Shoshani was pronounced dead at the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board on Wednesday morning dispatched an investigator to begin a probe, and meet with manufacturers of the plane and engine. The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating.
