A driver who stopped her car on a highway to let a family of ducklings cross the road is facing criminal charges after two people were killed when their motorcycle crashed into her vehicle.
25-year-old Emma Czornobaj is facing serious charges as a result of her compassion toward animals.
While driving down Highway 30 in Candiac, Quebec back in 2010, she spotted a group of ducklings crossing the road. The animal lover said in court that she planned to capture the orphaned animals and take them home.
Pauline and Andre Roy Volikakis were enjoying a cruise on their Harleys that day. Their daughter Jesse was riding with her father when Pauline Volikakis witnessed the horror unfold in front of her.
"I saw a body go over the car. It looked like a rag doll." a witness, Martine Tessier, testified in court.
The 16-year-old girl was trapped under the Honda Civic and later died in hospital.Volikakis embraced her husband who then died in her arms.
Czornobaj was found guilty on four charges: Two counts of criminal negligence causing death, which carries a sentence of up to life in prison, and two counts of dangerous driving causing death.
"Future and present drivers should know that we don't stop on highways," said the widowed Volikakis, who hopes the publicity of the case will encourage drivers to be more careful.
Czornobaj was released until her pre-sentence hearing, scheduled for August 8.
