Two boaters, Sean McGovern, 50, and Mellisa Morris, 52, were pulled to safety off Hallandale Beach, Florida, on Saturday after treading water for fourteen hours after falling off their boat in the Atlantic Ocean.
The couple fell off their 30-foot boat, which was in gear, near Key Largo at about 6 p.m. on Friday evening, and watched as the boat pulled away. They were then forced to tread water for fourteen hours without any life vests or means to communicate with nearby boaters. They tried to signal for help by waving a T-shirt.
Two Broward sheriff's detectives, a Broward firefighter and one of the officers' father-in-law, who were fishing at 8am the next morning, noticed splashing in the water from their boat. They at first thought they were fish, but later realized it was McGovern waving his shirt to draw attention.
The couple was pulled onto the boat, suffering from mild hypothermia and multiple jellyfish stings. They were passed over to the Coast Guard and taken to the Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard station. The couple's boat washed-up later on shore at Fort Lauderdale.
