Australian investigators have discovered evidence that power may have gone out on Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 before it mysteriously disappeared.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau's findings raises questions over whether the plane's cockpit equipment may have been tampered with, possibly in an attempt to avoid being picked up by radar.
The bureau's report reveals that the missing Boeing 777's satellite data unit had unexpectedly tried to log on to a satellite around an hour and a half after the flight left from Kuala Lumpur on March 8.
This request, also called a 'handshake', was likely to have been caused by a power failure on board, according to the 55-page report.
'A log-on request in the middle of a flight is not common and can occur for only a few reasons,' the report states.
Reasons that could cause such log-on requests include a power interruption to the aircraft satellite data unit (SDU), a software failure, loss of critical systems providing input to the SDU or a loss of the link due to aircraft attitude.
