On July 1st, more than five hundred thousand people joined a pro-democracy rally, before nearly eight thousand Hong Kong citizens and student gathered for an "Occupy Central" rehearsal at Chater Road and outside Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying's office.
They pledged to ensure that the Hong Kong people would be able to name candidates for government elections. The protesters said they would occupy the places till the next morning.
Peaceful "Occupy Central" activists said it was not the best time to occupy the spots. However, student movement groups said they believe the government is about to announce the results of the first-stage political reform consultation and once it is announced, it will not be easy to reverse the situation.
Police had expected the protesters to leave by 4:30 a.m. The demonstrators did not apply for a permit prior to the event, therefore the protesters did not resist if the police tried to break up the demonstration. The protesters were also prepared to accept charges against them with the assistance of an attorney.
