Video of a woman's savage beating at the hands of a California Highway Patrol officer, which by any measure, appears to be a clear case of police brutality has created a firestorm of media interest and the woman's family is demanding an explanation.
Smartphone video of the incident came about after Marleen Pinnock, a woman in her 50s, wandered shoeless into traffic near an on-ramp to Interstate 10 in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Highway Patrol arrived and an officer spoke to Pinnock, who one witness described as, "out of it", but not a threat to anyone. Just at that moment, David Diaz was driving up the on ramp and began filming with his iPhone.
Diaz says the officer, whose name has not been released, crossed the road and said something to Pinnock, after she had walked off the freeway. The scene is shocking. Neither he, nor Pinnock's family understand why she deserved this ground and pound.
A second man, reportedly an off-duty officer arrived and helped the CHP officer handcuff the grandmother.
The CHP has acknowledged the video and said it will conduct a thorough investigation. The officer has been stood down while the circumstances surrounding the use of force are examined.
