Baby burned in New Taipei City hospital: Careless nurse wraps newborn in electric blanket

2015-05-12 18

A newborn baby was burned by an electric blanket in a hospital in New Taipei city, Taiwan on July 15.

The hospital passed blame onto the manufacture of blanket, while the latter said the product is not supposed to be used for babies.

The baby was delivered to her mother for breastfeeding before being returned to her baby bed. The nurse claimed that she removed the electric blanket when the baby's body temperature had reached normalcy. But two hours later, the nurse found the baby's legs burned during a diaper change.

The medical staff claimed that the baby was wrapped with layers of clothes so she was only burned on the lower 20% of her body. There were six big blisters from her bottom to her heels.

The hospital said they will take responsibility and have the blankets returned and examined by the manufacturer. Doctors say the baby will need about two weeks to recover. The scars could be reduced with further medical treatment.

The related medical staff might face suspension or have their license revoked and may also face up to three years behind bars. The hospital has been fined over $8,000 so far and may be forced to pay the parents further compensation in civil court.
