A rookie Jersey City police officer was killed by a gunman at a Walgreens early Sunday morning. Officer Melvin Santiago, 23, and his partner were in the first car to respond to a reported armed robbery at the Walgreens near the corner of Communipaw Ave. and JFK Blvd. on Sunday morning just after 4am.
Officer Santiago had barely opened the door of his squad car when Lawrence Campbell, 27, ambushed them. He fatally shot Santiago in the head moments before other officers including those from a second squad car, returned fire. Minutes earlier, Campbell told a witness outside the drug store to watch the news because he was going to be famous.
Lawrence Campbell initially entered the Walgreens at 4am and asked the security guard where the greeting card aisle was located. Campbell then left the store, but returned immediately with a knife. He assaulted the security guard, punching him several times and taking his pistol.
Campbell didn't take anything other than the security guard's gun, and waited on site for police to arrive. Outside the Walgreens, Campbell apologised for his conduct before telling the same witness he would be famous.
Campbell was one of three suspects sought in a separate killing in Jersey City. Police are still searching for the other two suspects in that incident, including one Daniel Wilson.
