Child migrant crisis: Texas Governor calls in the National Guard to stop influx from Central America

2015-05-12 1

Texas Governor Rick Perry announced on Monday that he would send up to 1,000 National Guard troops to boost patrols along the Mexico border in an attempt to tackle an influx of illegal child immigration.

Governor Perry said the troops would be sent to the Rio Grande Valley sector where they would use their assets to help monitor and patrol the border.

The move comes in response to an influx of undocumented migrant children from central American countries including Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

In the nine months to the end of June, up to 57,000 children from Central America have crossed the border in the US, with most passing through the Rio Grande Valley sector.

The White House recently requested $3.7 billion from Congress to help address what has been described as a humanitarian crisis.
