MH17 animation: Puncture holes evidence Malaysian jet was shot down by a fragmentation missile

Military and aviation experts say it now seems almost certain that a fragmentation warhead fired from a missile battery is responsible for bringing down Malaysian Airlines Flight 17.

Photographs of hole-ridden fragments of the stricken Boeing 777 recovered from the 34-square kilometre crash site in eastern Ukraine have been sent to Western defence analysts who say apparent external puncture points are consistent with a fragmentation warhead carried by an SA-11, the missile U.S. officials say is likely responsible for bringing down the plane.

U.S. intelligence officials believe that Russian likely provided at least one SA-11 missile system, known as a Buk-M1, to pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.

From the angle of shrapnel entry points, it seems likely that such a missile exploded below and in front of the aircraft's port side. The SA-11's warhead is designed to explode 30 to 90 metres from its target, shooting shrapnel at high speed into the plane's hull, engine and wing flaps.

One section of fuselage with numerous external puncture marks recovered from a villager's back garden appears to belong to a section below a cockpit window.
