2015-05-12 2

The 5 Freeway in Los Angeles was shut down for more than three hours on Friday after a possibly suicidal man refused to leave an overpass.

Police received reports of a possible jumper on the freeway overpass near Olympic Boulevard at around 3:30 p.m. All lanes were shut down on both sides of the 5 Freeway about 10 minutes later, authorities said.

The backup on this major north-south thoroughfare created a ripple effects, crippling traffic across the region.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s department had crisis negotiators on scene to talk with the man.

At around 7:15 p.m. police were finally able to reopen the freeway and the man was taken into police custody.
