New York shootout: alleged child molester Charles Mozdir shot dead in West Village

Charles Mozdir, a suspected child molester who had been on the run for two years, was shot dead in New York on Monday afternoon.

At around 1:10 p.m. on Monday, officers entered a smoke shop in the West Village where Mozdir had been working in an attempt to arrest him.

Mozdir turned opened fire at the officers with a 32-caliber revolver, prompting the police to return fire. According to the New York Post, an NYPD detective was shot in the stomach, while two U.S. Marshals were grazed in the elbow and buttocks respectively. All the officers’ injuries were non-life threatening.

Mozdir was recently featured in a CNN programme that centers on fugitives who had committed murder, fraud and other crimes. Quoting the host John Walsh, CNN reported that the episode on Mozdir led to a tip-off about his address.

Mozdir had been accused of child abuse after a couple, who were both friends with him, reported him to the police two years ago. According to the wife, she was desperate for help as she was taking care of her baby girl and feverish 5-year-old son on a June night in 2012, while her husband was away.

At her husband’s urging, the woman sought help from their common friend Charles Mozdir. The woman and her son were lying on the bed while Mozdir was awake watching over the sick boy by the bedside. The boy later told his mother that Mozdir had touched his private parts and told him not to tell anyone.

Police later searched Mozdir’s house, where they found child pornography on his computers and mobile phone. Mozdir was arrested four days after the alleged harassment. The 32-year-old man posted a $250,000 bail, but did not make an appearance on his arraignment scheduled on June 15.
