Authorities at the U.S. military air base in Ramstein, Germany have launched an investigation into the death of a young boy who was found in the wheel well of a C-130J transport aircraft.
The U.S. military is confirming reports that a teenage boy believed to be from somewhere in Africa was found dead in a C-130J transport plane on Sunday.
The boy apparently climbed into the plane’s rear wheel well somewhere during the plane’s journey that took it to several African nations.
Details are scarce, but media reports indicate the plane made stops in Mali, Senegal, Chad, Tunisia and Sicily before returning to Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
A piece of orange cloth protruding from the plane was found after the plane landed at Ramstein Air Base and the body of the stowaway was discovered.
The boy’s body was immediately taken for a medical tests as several parts of Africa are in the midst of an Ebola outbreak.
Tests, however, revealed the child was not infected with the deadly virus.
The discovery of the stowaway is an embarrassment for the U.S. military as it is not only a serious security breach but also resulted in the death of a child. The military says it is investigating.
