House Republicans are pushing ahead with a plan to sue President Obama, accusing him of trying to sidestep Congress and make his own laws.
The US House of Representatives passed a resolution to sue Obama for allegedly exceeding his constitutional powers. The 225-201 vote along party lines means House lawyers will now prepare legal documents to launch a lawsuit.
House Speaker John Boehner says the lawsuit will focus on the Obama administration’s decision to postpone the requirement in Obamacare that large companies provide health insurance for their workers.
Obama has dismissed the move as a waste of time. “Everyone sees this as a political stunt,” he said.
Republicans in Congress have complained on numerous occasions that Obama has exceeded his constitutional authority, in order to sidestep Congress by issuing executive orders.
Boehner’s problem is that historically suits from members of congress normally don’t do well because they lack “standing.”
In this latest lawsuit, Boehner is focusing on the part of Obamacare that is not being enforced, Obama’s decision to hold off on requiring large employers to provide health insurance. So basically, Republicans are fighting the decision to suspend a requirement they didn’t like in the first place.
