Kids and guns: Pueblo toddler in critical condition after being shot by a 5 year old boy

2015-05-12 4

Neighbors on this quiet street in Pueblo, Colorado say the occupants of this home would leave their kids unsupervised for hours, possibly factoring into yet another case of kids playing with firearms.

Somehow a 9-year-old boy knew the hiding spot of a gun in the house. Outside in the backyard, other children were playing. The boy was likely boasting about the weapon, when suddenly a 5-year-old boy got hold of it.

Then the gun goes off, striking a nearby 3-year-old girl. The girl’s mother ran outside to see what was going on, while her boyfriend, 22-year-old Adrian Chavez, bolted out the other door, because it was his gun that went off.

The girl is in critical condition at this time. Police caught up with Chavez a short time later. He had a warrant for not appearing in court months earlier.

The boy told police he learned from video games what the trigger was for. Chavez faces child negligence charges for making the weapon easy to access.
