Two people, as yet unidentified, died after being hit by a train on elevated tracks in Chicago on Thursday afternoon.
The accident took place about a mile west of Western Avenue Station near 21st St. and Homan Avenue. It’s unknown why the man and woman, whose ages were not released, were walking on the tracks, but both died after being struck by inbound train No. 1272.
The Chicago Sun Times reports that the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office has confirmed the deaths, but were not able to supply further details as of Thursday night.
Seven outbound trains from Chicago Station were cancelled leaving many commuters stranded for several hours.
Service on the BNSF Line was mostly restored just after 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 7.
Chicago commuters were told to expect extended delays Thursday evening and transit authorities recommended people consider alternative transportation options.
Metra spokesman Michael Gillis told the Sun Times that due to the incident, BNSF trains that run between Aurora and Chicago, will have a reduced schedule Friday (August 8) morning.
