2015-05-12 1

A teenage girl was killed and another seriously injured in a Long Island Sound boating accident on Wednesday (August 6).

Two 16-year-old girls were riding in an inner tube pulled by a boat driven by their two friends, also 16. The girls fell off the inner tube and became entangled in the boat’s propeller when their friend turned it around.

One girl died at the scene, and the other was rushed to the hospital to receive extensive surgery on her leg. The victim, whose name was not released, and the other girls involved in the accident are all rising juniors at Greenwich High School.

Boat operators are required to be at least 13 years old and carry a safe boater’s certificate, according to Connecticut boating regulations. It remains unknown whether the driver had been properly certified.
