Joker’s Jinx roller coaster malfunction at Six Flags America leaves riders stranded

2015-05-12 2

Six Flags America has fallen victim to the Joker’s Jinx, as 24 riders were trapped when the roller coaster stopped without warning on Sunday. The Joker’s Jinx accelerates riders from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds, then rockets through inversions four times.

But at 2:30pm on Sunday, a fully packed train came to a sudden stop almost 80 feet off the ground. The train wasn’t upside down, but passengers could neither escape their restraints nor walk on the steel tracks.

Firefighters used extending ladders to reach the train and secure the riders in harnesses. Then, two at a time, the passengers escaped to safety, with all aboard rescued by 4pm.

The Joker’s Jinx will remain closed until park officials and the ride’s manufacturer determine what caused the roller coaster to stop. Park officials say the ride’s safety system functioned properly.
