A bullet from an Orlando police officer’s gun struck an innocent bystander early Tuesday morning at the Vixen bar on Orange Avenue.Police were responding to reports of a man, Kody Roach, waving a gun around in the bar just before 1 a.m.
The 911 caller told dispatchers, "Yeah, I have a gun-wielding maniac at 116 South Orange Avenue."
The dispatcher responded, “Did he actually fire the gun?”
“No but he set it on the bar top and he wielded it many times … a couple times. And we had to throw him out.”
Once outside, Roach pounded on the locked door until police arrived. The police report reads that an officer used a taser on Roach but it was ineffective. Roach was still armed with a .40 caliber handgun and police fired nine rounds at the suspect.
A bullet from officer Eduardo Sanguino’s handgun went through the front door and struck a woman standing on the other side. That woman was 22-year-old Maria Godinez. She died as a result of the wound.
Roach’s gun turned out to be stolen and unloaded. He was treated for gunshot wounds and is in critical condition. Roach faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and may face further charges for Godinez’s death.
Sanguino and Officer Jeff Angel have been placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigate the incident.
