A membrane containing tiny bones was found in a 62-year-old Indian woman, named Jyoti Kumar. Kumar had an ectopic pregnancy 38 years ago.
In 1978, Kumar was told that she had an ectopic pregnancy and doctors suggested she receive an operation to remove the fetus.
However, Kumar was afraid and refuse the surgery. She took some painkillers and thought everything would be fine.
After 36 years, Kumar started to suffer a serious stomach ache. At first the doctor thought she had cancer, then found out that she actually still had her dead fetus in her abdomen, stuck between her intestine, bladder, and uterus.
The soft tissue of the dead fetus has been liquefied and became a bag of baby bones.
Dr Mohammad Yunus Shah said Kumar’s case might be the longest recorded instance of a dead fetus remaining in the mother.
