A preliminary report released by the Dutch Safety Board states that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was hit by “high-energy objects” before it went down in eastern Ukraine on July 17 of this year.
The report states that the aircraft broke apart mid-air after its fuselage was punctured by objects forward of the plane. The report did not specifically point to a surface-to-air missile as the cause of the accident.
Since the downing of the plane, there has been widespread speculation that rebels operating in Ukraine mistakenly shot the aircraft down with a Buk missile, thinking the target was a Ukrainian military aircraft. Multiple reports claim that there is evidence that such a weapon smuggled in from Russia was used to bring down the plane.
However, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said it is too early to place blame, adding that officials need to be careful not to draw conclusions too quickly.
