After a dozen older and lonely financially independent women were swindled by Taiwanese scammers, a victim named Sophia emerged as a hero. She gathered 11 other victims to form an anti-romance-scam team.
The twelve of them worked in shifts to notify potential victims, sending out more than 2 thousand warning emails. They’ve successfully prevented about 15 hundred scams.
Sophia and the gang even managed to talk one of the scammers into becoming their informant.
A team member named Shelly says the scammers pretend to be on the market for marriage, and then demand anywhere from 600 to 3 thousand bucks. Shelly wired that money, realizing too late that it was a scam.
Team leader Sophia says she started the team in order to warn thousands of women who might be targeted for their loneliness. And she’s been successful, saving potential targets an estimated $333 thousand.
