Motorized cart fail: Michigan woman jacks Walmart motorized wheelchair, busted by police

A Michigan woman accused of shoplifting from a local Wal-Mart decided to drive off on one of the store’s motorized wheelchairs because she “didn’t feel like walking” home.

Shirley Mason, 46, is accused of boosting a motorized wheelchair shopping cart from a Fruitport Township Wal-Mart and then riding it almost two miles before police caught up with her.

Mason, who already had an outstanding warrant for her arrest when the Sept. 8 Wal-Mart incident occurred, has been hit with two separate counts. One for second-degree retail fraud stemming from a previous Roosevelt Wal-Mart theft and a second for organized retail crime from the Fruitport incident.

A call came in around 8:05 on Sept. 8 after a customer saw Mason leaving the parking lot area on the motorized wheelchair.

When police caught up with Mason on the motorized wheelchair, she was nearly two miles away on westbound Barney Street. Police found her sitting on the $1,200 cart with up to $600 worth of alleged stolen clothing in six plastic grocery bags.

Mason told the police officer that she called for a ride, but wasn’t able to find one so she took the cart “because she didn’t feel like walking.”

Mason told police she paid for the stuff, but couldn’t show proof of purchase. She said she had planned to sell the clothes for money.

Mason and another 53-year-old man who was with her at the time were both arrested. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
