Several Islamic State sympathisers was arrested in Australia during counterterrorism raids launched by Australian police in Sydney and Brisbane on Thursday.

The operation was conducted 48 hours after police intercepted a phone call made from Mohammad Ali Baryalei, reportedly the Australia’s most senior member of the Islamic State, who ordered a terrorist act in Australia, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

The plan reportedly involved the random kidnapping and beheading of an Australian off the street, with a recording of the incident to be released through the Islamic State’s propaganda department, ABC reported.

More than 800 police raided over a dozen properties across 12 suburbs in Sydney and parts of Brisbane. A total of 15 people were arrested. Mohammad Ali Baryalei and a 22-year-old Sydney man, Omarjan Azari are accused of planning terrorist acts. Nine of the 15 detainees were later released, according to Fox News.
