Wholesale beating: Costco staff breaks leg of shopper for refusing to produce receipt

2015-05-11 1

Oregon man Timothy Walls has sued Costco for being after being badly beaten by a Costco worker when he refused to show his receipt at an branch near Northeast Portland on January 28, 2013.

Walls says that on his way out of the bulk-buy store with his groceries, an employee grabbed hold of his shopping cart and demanded to see his receipt. Such is Costco policy. The policy states: “To ensure that all members are correctly charged for the merchandise purchased, all receipts and merchandise will be inspected as you leave the warehouse.”

Walls refused to show his receipt. The pair argued before Walls grabbed the worker by the shirt collar, pushed him against a wall and struck him in the throat.

Another employee, who had reportedly trained with U.S. armed forces, delivered a martial arts-style kick to Walls’ leg, fracturing it in several places.

Walls is suing Costco for $670,000, including $150,000 for past and future medical expenses, $20,000 for lost wages and $500,000 for pain and suffering. The lawsuit was filed last week in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
