White House intruder: Omar Gonzalez made it into East Room

2015-05-11 2

White House intruder Omar Gonzalez, who broke into the White House earlier this month, made it much farther inside than previously reported, it has been revealed.

Gonzalez reportedly made it through the building’s front entrance and as far as the East Room, which is normally used for press conferences and award presentations.

According to the Washington Post, an alarm box near the front entrance of the White House had been muted at the time of the incident, due to a request from the usher’s office.

Gonzalez made it past the stairway which leads to the first family’s living quarters and into the East Room. Gonzalez reached the doorway leading to the Green Room where he was tackled by a Secret Service agent.

A Secret Service official told the Washington Post that the usher’s office had complained the boxes were noisy and frequently malfunctioned.

Secret Service Director Julia Pierson is expected to appear at a hearing about the Gonzalez incident at the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday.
