Hong Kong protests: Citizens occupy downtown center for sixth straight day

2015-05-11 1

It’s Tuesday and mass public demonstrations sparked by striking students in Hong Kong have entered their sixth day. Numbers have swelled. Protesters are calling for the public to freely elect candidates of their choosing in 2017 elections for the city’s top job, the office of Chief Executive. They’re also calling for the resignation of the man who currently holds that position, the pro-Beijing Leung Chun-ying.

Following weekend violence which saw police use tear gas and pepper spray on peaceful, nonviolent protesters, riot police have since withdrawn and the streets are calm. Eighty-nine people have been arrested since Friday.

Leung has so far refused to countenance political reform or stepping down. He has branded the protests “illegal.”

The demonstrations have been marked by spontaneous organization and gestures of support from wider Hong Kong society, with supplies of water, bread, snacks, masks, goggles and umbrellas finding their way to drop zones for the tens of thousands who refuse to leave the streets.

Thousands of office workers are expected to join the protesters on Wednesday, a public holiday to commemorate the founding of the People’s Republic of China. For these protesters, right now there is little to celebrate.
