Mexican Farmworkers Face Police Repression

Mexican agricultural day laborers on strike in the San Quintin Valley in the northwestern state of Baja California were victims of a massive police repression Saturday that left 70 injured, which came on the heels of a previous attack in which three workers were killed. The farmworkers say police invaded their homes and beat men, women, and children, and are demanding that the state governor resign. The workers have been on strike since March, demanding an increase in wages from the current US$7 for a 15 hour day and an end to slavery-like conditions. Negotiations will be held with the federal government on Wednesday to seek a solution to the conflict. Clayton Conn reports from northern Mexico. teleSUR
