President Barack Obama formally apologized for a drone strike that killed aid workers Warren Weinstein, an American held by Al Qaeda since 2011, and Giovanni Lo Porto, an Italian held since 2012.
"As a husband and as a father, I cannot begin to imagine the anguish that the Weinstein and Lo Porto families are enduring today," Obama told reporters in a press conference on Thursday at the White House.
The CIA drone strike that killed Weinstein and Lo Porto targeted a suspected Al Qaeda compound in Pakistan's tribal areas near the border with Afghanistan. The strike is believed to have killed Al Qaeda leader Ahmed Farouq, who was also an American citizen, in addition to Weinstein and Lo Porto.
American-born al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn was also killed in January in the same operation by another CIA drone strike. One of the strikes was on January 14, the other on January 19. It is not clear which strike killed Weinstein and Lo Porto.
