The governor of Maryland declared a state of emergency Monday after protesters clashed with Baltimore City Police late Monday following the funeral of Freddie Gray, who died on April 19 after suffering serious injuries while in police custody.

Protesters began throwing bricks, bottles and other items at officers as well as smashing shops and setting cars on fire. Police fired beanbags and rubber bullets at looters in response, according to the New York Times.

More than 80 Maryland State Police were sent to assist Baltimore city police, CNN reported. The governor of Maryland has also activated the National Guard. The mayor of Baltimore said a weeklong curfew will be imposed beginning Tuesday.

Police said at least 27 people have been arrested, according to New York Times. Fifteen police officers were injured in clashes.

The state of emergency will also see a week-long curfew imposed while as many as 5,000 National Guard troops could be drafted in and deployed.
