Russian Progress spacecraft: Roscosmos abandons Progress 59 after it spins out of control

2015-05-11 192

Russia’s Roskosmos space agency has abandoned a Progress M-27M (59) spacecraft after a malfunction caused it to spin out of control.

The Russian Progress 59 spacecraft, launched on April 28, is currently rotating at a rate of 360 degrees every five seconds, according to a statement by the Joint Space Operations Centre.

The spacecraft is orbiting approximately 197 km above the Earth and it is expected to stay in orbit for five days before plunging back towards Earth, the Telegraph reported.

Experts said the doomed spacecraft will likely burn up as it re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere and any surviving debris from the spacecraft would be expected to land between May 5 to May 7. However, experts will not know the exact location for at least another two days, according to the Telegraph.
