Dave Goldberg, the chief executive of SurveyMonkey and husband of Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, died of severe head trauma on Friday night after he fell off a treadmill at a private resort in Mexico, according to a Mexican government official.

The 47-year-old was with friends and family on vacation at the Four Seasons Resort near Punta Mita, a large development with two hotels and several private villas close to Puerto Vallarta, said a spokesman for the prosecutor's office in Nayarit State.

Goldberg left his room around 4 p.m. on Friday and made his way to the fitness center. He collapsed while exercising and died of head trauma and blood loss, said the spokesman. His brother, Robert Goldberg, found him on the floor of the gym at around 7 p.m. The spokesman said that Goldberg appeared to have fallen off the treadmill and cracked his head open.

Goldberg was taken to Hospital San Javier in Nuevo Vallarta, with weak vital signs where he later died. The spokesman also added that the incident appeared to be an accident.

Goldberg worked at Yahoo and a venture capital firm before coming to SurveyMonkey. He lived with Ms. Sandberg in Menlo Park with two their two children.

The family is planning an invitation-only celebration of Goldberg's life on Tuesday at Stanford Memorial Auditorium.
