The United States has approved ferry services between Florida and Cuba for the first time in five decades.

The U.S. Treasury and Commerce departments gave approval to at least four companies, including Havana Ferry Partners of Fort Lauderdale, Baja Ferries of Miami, United Caribbean Lines Florida of Greater Orlando and Airline Brokers Co. of Miami and Fort Lauderdale to run ferry services between Florida and Cuba, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Havana Ferry Partners plans to launch its ferry service between Key West and Havana, while Baja Ferries is looking into the possibilities of sailing between Port Everglades, Port Manatee and other Florida ports to Cuba, reported by Sun Sentinel.

Airlines Brokers Co. is considering Port Everglades among other places. United Caribbean Lines Florida is considering launching its ferry service to Cuba from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, the Tampa area and Port Canaveral, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Americans are not allowed to travel to Cuba for general tourism except for those in 12 categories including family visits, official government business and humanitarian projects, AFP reported.
