'Support My School' telethon raises Rs.13.6 crore
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar were among the stars who leant their support to a telethon to raise money for schools in India.
The 12-hour telethon was part of the six-month Coca Cola-NDTV 'Support My School' campaign, which raised Rs 13.6 crore towards improvements in 272 schools across India.
Speaking at the event, Rai Bachchan said: "As a mother, I understand the urge to provide your child with the best opportunities available to help them grow and prosper. Every child deserves these opportunities, every girl needs to know that she herself is a beacon of hope and has the power to influence her future."
Indian cricketer Tendulkar, who broadcast the event live on his Facebook page, said: "Telethon 2013 has once again been an overwhelming experience with higher levels of enthusiasm and support for the 'Support My School' campaign than ever before.
"The campaign is very close to my heart and I am delighted at the response we have received this time from individuals and corporations alike."
Other celebrities lending their support at the telethon were Vicky Donor star Ayushmann Khurrana, Ajay Devgn and wife Kajol.
Launched in January 2011, the 'Support My School' campaign was designed to promote "a model of healthy active schools across the country".
