Follow the music, admire the art, place yourself inside historic architecture, in Telesur's "Cultura Latina". This week's program, hosted by Mauricio Izquierdo, begins with a visit to the San Marcos neighborhood, on the fringe of the historic center of Quito, Ecuador, where Casa Karakola, a community initiative, offers an open space for performances and workshops art and culture. For the past three years Casa Karakola has taken its cultural shows and performances based on community concerns to the most marginalized neighborhoods of the Ecuadoran capital, so that its art can be shared by all. The Karakola collective seeks to promote cultural expression on a neighborhood level with the involvement of its residents. Its effort is part of a regional network stretching from Mexico to Argentina. Then it's off to Mexico City for the 8th Plural Dance Festival, which featured 110 companies and 1,150 dancers on stage. The festival was held nonstop on April 24 from 10am to 8pm in three different venues and offered an array of dance styles, from folkloric to Indian, classical, and belly dancing, and even hip-hop, with both professional and amateur groups participating. teleSUR
