Honduras: Nurses Threaten Strike if Conditions Don't Improve

2015-05-08 1

Working under substandard conditions, often without even receiving uniforms, and with low pay, Honduran nurses have threatened to call a general industry-wide strike if the government does not attend to their demands. The public health system is in dire straits as the government has cut its budget this year by 20%. Two weeks ago authorities said that by the end of the May the main hospitals will run out of medicines. Honduras has one nurse per 30 patients, while the international standard is three nurses for every 10 patients. Gerardo Torres reports from Tegucigalpa. teleSUR
